I’m neurotic. I become really anxious about things that normal people don’t understand, especially social situations. I’m terrified about what others think of me. I don’t like to smile when people walk by. I think up excuses not to go to parties. I really hate ordering sandwiches because I have to answer too many condiment-related questions. “Why don’t you just smile, for godssakes?” asks one person. “Just go to the damn party,” squawks another. A third, uninvited person shouts, “It’s just a sandwich! Who cares?” Verbal abuse aside, it’s not that easy. It’s taken a frustrating amount of time to try to get over this, and the more frustrated I become, the more anxious I become, and the less I interact with other people. I’ve begun stitching words about my neuroses, hoping that they will relieve me of the feeling of having a dirty secret, and maybe others will relate.
